JANAThis policy covers the Jana mobile app (iOS and Android) and the optional Jana Wi-Fi speaker. It explains what data is collected, why, who it's shared with, and how you can access, correct or delete it — in line with the GDPR.
Data controller: Hamza Chaouch — chaouchhamzatn@gmail.com.
Jana works without an account
You can use every core feature of the app — prayer times, Qibla, the Quran library, the Mushaf reader, daily content and notifications — without ever signing in. Local/offline mode is the default.
Signing in with Apple or Google is optional. If you choose to, we receive your name, email address and a provider account identifier, used only to recognise your account across devices.
Location
If you haven't paired a Jana speaker, the app uses your phone's location (with your permission) to compute prayer times and the Qibla direction.
Your coordinates are sent to the Aladhan API (aladhan.com) to calculate prayer times — the same public API the Jana speaker itself calls. The Qibla bearing is computed entirely on your device using the phone's magnetometer; your location never leaves the phone for that calculation.
Location is not stored on our servers and is not used for any purpose other than these two calculations.
Notifications
Prayer, Adhkar and reading-goal reminders are scheduled locally on your device. If you enable them, your device registers a push token (via Apple Push Notification service or Firebase Cloud Messaging, through Expo's push service) so reminders can be delivered reliably — we don't use this token for anything beyond notification delivery.
The Jana speaker
If you pair a speaker, the app talks to it directly over your home Wi-Fi network — never through a cloud server we operate. Your Wi-Fi credentials are sent straight to the device during pairing and are never transmitted to us.
Content requests
Loading the Quran audio catalog, Mushaf pages and Tafsir commentary from hamzachaouch.com involves standard server logs (IP address, timestamp, requested resource) kept briefly for security and debugging. The daily Hadith, Dua and Name of Allah come from UmmahAPI (ummahapi.com); no API key or personal data is sent to it.
What stays on your device
Your settings, favourite reciters, downloaded audio, Mushaf bookmarks, saved ayahs and reading progress are stored locally on your phone and are never uploaded to us.
What we don't do
- No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs
- No advertising or ad trackers
- No selling or sharing of personal data with third parties for marketing
- No tracking across other apps or websites
Third-party services
The app relies on a short list of services to work: Apple and Google (optional sign-in), the Aladhan prayer-times API, UmmahAPI (daily content), Expo's push notification service, and our own backend and object storage for audio, Mushaf and Tafsir content. None of them receive more than what's described above.
Your rights
Since most data never leaves your device, there is usually nothing to request. If you created an account, you can ask to access, correct or delete it at any time by emailing chaouchhamzatn@gmail.com, or by signing out and clearing the app's local data from your device settings.
Children
Jana is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, the "last updated" date above will change and, where appropriate, we'll note it in the app.
